2014 Academic Leadership of the Year
Dr. Diana L. Burley is Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University (GW). Prior to joining the GW faculty, she served as a Program Officer at The National Science Foundation (NSF) where she managed multi-million dollar grant programs designed to increase the capacity of the U.S. higher education enterprise to produce scientists. At NSF, she served as the lead program officer of the Cyber Corps© program and based on her Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) for outstanding efforts toward the development of the federal cyber security workforce.
Dr. Burley has been twice appointed (2012, 2013) to the State of Virginia Joint Commission on Technology & Science (JCOTS) Cyber Security Committee – an advisory committee that issues reports and recommendations (including legislation) to the Virginia General Assembly. She serves as co-Chair of the National Academy of Sciences Committee "Professionalizing the Nation's Cybersecurity Workforce: Criteria for Future Decision Making." She is also the Co-Principal Investigator for Research of the $5 million NSF-funded National CyberWatch Center (NCC). The research mission of NCC is to advance cybersecurity education by leading collaborative research efforts to strengthen the national cybersecurity workforce. In addition, she serves as an external evaluator for educational research on LUCID: A Spectator-Targeted Visualization for Cybersecurity Competitions.
She holds a BA in Economics from the Catholic University of America; an M.S. in Public Management and Policy, an M.S. in Organization Science, and a Ph.D. in Organization Science and Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University where she studied as a Woodrow Wilson Foundation Fellow in Public Policy.
