22nd Colloquium - Call for Papers

For the past twenty-two years, The Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) has supported Cyber Security educators, researchers and practitioners in their efforts to improve curricula and foster discussion of current and emerging trends. As such, we are opening submissions for the 2018 CISSE conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In order to be considered for presentation at the CISSE 2018 conference, please submit an original, unpublished paper in the field of cybersecurity / information assurance education by March 31, 2018, for one of the following tracks.

(Superior papers will also be published in our bi-annual Journal. Papers that have been presented at the 2017 Colloquium will also be considered for further development and publication.)

Academic Research Paper Track

Academic Research papers must follow commonly understood standards for scholarly publication. That will include a detailed and complete description of the hypotheses, your method of research, or implementation and your conclusions supported by proper statistical methods. For this track CISSE will expect your paper to focus on one of the many facets of Cyber Security Education: teaching, enabling the acquisition of knowledge, adopting skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Of special interest are those papers that focus on engaging a diverse population in Cyber Security education.

Education Application and Tools Paper Track

This track is for papers focusing on descriptions of your methods for incorporating Cyber Security pedagogy, techniques, tools and practical classroom innovations into your curriculum, course ware or classroom. While this track does not expect the normal rigor of the Research track (with respect to data sets, research design and hypothesis testing), we will expect enough detail that would allow other academics to implement your concepts. A full report with the pros and cons of your approach and samples is required.

New Innovations and Ideas Paper Track

This track is designed to spark academic discussions. We gather once a year to discuss new curricula, course ware, degree programs and ideas. Papers in this track must discuss in detail all the things necessary to implement an innovation. It must show how that innovation might impact Cyber Security Education. Unlike the Ed App & Tool track these ideas do not have to have been implemented but are meant to engage us in academic dialogue and debate.

Student Paper Track

A submission to this track must also fit into one of the above tracks: Educational research Track or Experience Reports & Tools Track or New Curricula, Programs, Degrees and Position Track. One talented student will be chosen as the “Erich Spengler Student Paper of the Year” and receive free registration, 3 nights at the hotel and a travel stipend of $500.

Paper Submission Instructions

Basically, we expect a well-formed and capably written idea, which advances the field of cybersecurity, and which is adequately contextualized and sufficiently supported by the literature. The implications for general application should be clear as well as their advantage and importance to the at-large purposes of the field. Conclusions should be supported by analytic means, either empirical or subjectively derived through commonly accepted methods. Graphic, or tabular support is encouraged.

Please use the following template for your submission and note the word count range of 3,000 to 4,000 (8-10 pages), with bibliographies that reflect sufficient consideration of the literature with a no-more-than 250 word abstract. Be sure that all photos, graphs and illustrations have a print resolution of no less than 300 dpi.

Please do not put in any reference to your names, your center or school in the paper to be considered for publication. Make sure to provide contact information in the body of the email, so we may contact you regarding your paper status. Please identify the Track that you have chosen in the subject line of your email submission. Also let us know in that email if you would like to be a reviewer for the papers for CISSE 2018, and we will add you to that committee.

  • CISSE 2018: New Innovations and Ideas Paper Track
  • CISSE 2018: Student Paper Track

A student paper (authored by a student) must also fit in one of the above tracks, so please include both, i.e. Student Academic Research Paper or Student Innovation.

Poster Sessions (Faculty, Researchers & Students Only)

Faculty, Students and Researchers are invited to submit a short abstract request for the poster sessions. Poster sessions are non-commercial presentations of topics of interest to the community. The goal of the poster session is to stimulate conversations in the community. Posters present an opportunity to contribute to the conversation without the full process of formal review and the topic and time constraints of formal papers and conference sessions. Lighting Talks/Round Table Discussions (Open to all Academic, Industry and Governmental attendees)

Please submit a short abstract of your 5-10 minute discussion topic for this session. Whether it be an idea you had for a paper or project, a paper in progress in need of feed-back, or just an interesting topic that would edify the CISSE membership, we welcome your submission to be considered for this session.
