  • The Chronicle of Higher Education hosted an on-line conference on ethical dilemmas of information Technology 1997-98
  • The Center for National Software Studies covers many of these themes.
  • UNESCO is organizing the Second International Congress on Ethical, Legal and Societal Challenges of Cyberspace which will take place in the Principality of Monaco, 1-3 October 1998. The Congress in which experts in telecommunication, information, computer science, social sciences and philosophy will be participating, will cover the areas of public domain and multilingualism in cyberspace, privacy, confidentiality and security in cyberspace as well as societies and globalization.

Academic Sites

The following sites provide a variety of Internet resources and links related to teaching computer ethics. Many links are course homepages from university classes—these sites are useful for getting a sense of how to structure a course and types of assignments to give students. All of these homepages also contain links to other Internet resources. Links to three organizations (The Centre for Applied Ethics, Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, and The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics) are included because of the rich variety of potential instructional materials and Internet links that they offer.

Wofford College: Computers, Ethics, and Society

This on-line Course Book by Charles D. Kay is a rich Internet resource. It contains dozens of links to Web sites on general ethical theories, computing and ethics, and specialized topics related to computing ethics (such as privacy, censorship, hacking, and so on). There is a particularly nice collection of links to WWW sites on intellectual property.

University Courses on Computers, Ethics, and Society

A site with links to approximately 20 university courses related to computers, ethics, and society.

St. Norbert College: Computer Ethics

An eclectic set of links to Internet resources related to computer ethics. Subjects include: copyright, K-12 acceptable use policies, the Communications Decency Act, and shareware.

Centre for Applied Ethics: Computer & Information Ethics Resources on the WWW

This University of British Columbia site contains extensive links to international organizations, university courses, and specialized topics related to computing and ethics. Particularly useful is the "Specific Topics" page, which provides links to dozens of subjects related to computing and ethics.

Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility: Teaching Courses in Computers, Ethics, and Society

An EXTENSIVE bibliography of instructional resources (books, syllabi, reports, and videos) for teaching courses related to computers, ethics, and society.

Princeton University: Computers, Ethics, and Social Responsibility

This is the course homepage for Computers, Ethics, and Social Responsibility taught by Helen Nissenbaum in the Spring of 1996. The site contains the course syllabus, assignments, and a nice list of links to related organizations and topics.

University of Delaware: Computers, Ethics, and Society

This is the course homepage for Computers, Ethics, and Social Responsibility taught by Richard Gordon in the Fall of 1995. The site contains the course syllabus, assignments, and a (still current) list of nice links to related organizations and topics.

Keene College: Introduction to Computer Information Processing

This is the course homepage for an introductory course on computing taught by Troy Kammerdiener in the Summer of 1997. What is useful are the three sets of power point slides on the following topics: Computer Health and Safety, Ethics and Crime with Computers, and Privacy in the Information Age.

Northeastern University: Computers and Society

This is a general homepage for a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses taught by Judith A. Perrolle on computers and society. Particularly useful are student assignments, community-oriented projects, and an on-line textbook authored by Perrolle entitled Computers and Social Change.

The Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility

The CCSR is sponsored by De Montfort University in the United Kingdom. Their web site explains that the mission of the Centre is "addressing the social and ethical impacts of information and communication technologies through research, consultancy and education. The "Resources" page contains a large number of links to specialized topics related to computers and ethics.

The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics

Santa Clara University supports this center, which is dedicated to improving the practice of ethics and ethical behavior in society. The site contains many resources, including publications, case studies, and current issues in applied ethics. Although this site is not tailored specifically to computer ethics, it does contain many cases and articles related to computers and ethics.

Rensselear Polytechnic Institute: Ethical and Professional Issues in Computing

This site is the result of an NSF-funded workshop for undergraduate teaching enhancement in the area of computer ethics. The page contains teaching modules, bibliographies, and links to Internet resources.
