Information Assurance (IA) - Information operations that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation. This includes providing for restoration of information systems by incorporating protection, detection, and reaction capabilities. (NSTISSI 4009, August, 1997)

Information Systems Security (Information Security and/or ISS) - Protection of information systems against unauthorized access to or modification of information whether in storage, processing or transit, and against the denial of service to authorized users, including those measures necessary to detect, document, and counter such threats. Critical Infrastructure - Critical infrastructures are those physical and cyber-based systems essential to the minimum operations of the economy and the government. (PDD 63, dated 22 May, 1998)
