Bill Caelli


Professor Bill Caelli is the Head of the School of Data Communications, a position he has held since early 1994, and was previously Director of the Information Security Research Centre, at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Bill is the winner of a 1986 AITA award (Australian Information Technology Award) for Achievement in the Information Technology Industry with over 35 years experience in the computer and data communications industry. In 1992 he received the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) "Silver Core" Award in recognition of his international contributions to the field of computer and telecommunications security. In July, 1993 he was declared a "Pioneer of the Computer Industry" in Australia by ComputerWorld, the industry newspaper and in November 1996 was named as a "ComputerWorld Fellow". In August 1995 he was made a Member of the Australian Science Technology and Engineering Council (ASTEC) and served on that Council until its operations were merged with the pertinent Prime Minister's Council in mid-1998. This body, operating under its own Act of the Australian Federal Government (1978), investigated and furnished information and advised the Commonwealth Government in respect to policy matters relating to science, technology and engineering. He has also served on an Australian Government industry research funding committee (1992-1994) related to support for the information technology and telecommunications industry. He is the Immediate-Past Chairperson of Technical Committee 11 (Security and Protection in Information Processing Systems) with the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). He remains as the representative of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) to this international body, itself established in the 1950s through UNESCO. Before joining QUT in 1988 he was a Founder of ERACOM Pty. Ltd., a major information technology security company with global affiliations and served as its Managing Director and then Technical Director from 1979 until mid-1998, when the company was purchased by European interests. He is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society.
